Little River Canyon National Preserve
One of the deepest canyons in the Southeast. Drive the Canyon Rim Parkway for overlooks, and cool off at the swimming holes in summer.
Cloudmont Ski & Golf Resort
Alabama’s only ski resort, with winter skiing when the weather allows and golf in the warmer months.
Downtown Mentone
Local shops and restaurants in a small mountain town. The Mentone Fall Festival is held each fall.
Lookout Mountain Parkway
A scenic drive along the mountain that passes right through Mentone.

About 1 hour 15 minutes away: Rock City, Ruby Falls and the Tennessee Aquarium.
When to come
- Fall: color usually peaks from late October into early November. This is the busiest season.
- Winter: quiet, cozy, and sometimes snowy on the mountain.
- Spring: waterfalls are at their fullest.
- Summer: cooler than the valley, with swimming holes nearby.
Tip: bring groceries. The lodge is out in the country, and Fort Payne has the closest full grocery stores.
